Cocktails with Daria - Cocktail Bar Print Swing Dress by Lindy Bop

Spring is almost here and in between the showers and cloud cover last weekend, I braved the slight chill in the air and took the new Daria cocktail bar print swing dress from Lindy Bop for a spin!

Lindy Bop have started stocking some beautiful dresses and skirts with statement prints in their newest collection and I love them! For me, the Daria dress has its little toe out of my comfort zone. On the one hand, it's a black swing dress, which is right up my ally. Yet on the other hand, it comes with a pink (yes, pink!) detachable belt and the pattern is a mix of fluorescent yellow, green and, more pink. I don't do colour well. I have always struggled with brights as my complexion is so pale and my hair dark. Yet Daria has the perfect mix of bright and dark which means that it works! I looked in my wardrobe last week to find a whole stack of just, black! So it is really nice to come out of my comfort zone and try new colours once in a while.

The print on the Daria dress is an eclectic mix of cocktail glasses, 1950s style atomic shapes, cats and poodles. It all sounds a bit much when you write it down, but the reality is, it works! This print is beautiful. The dress comes with a detachable pink belt which has plenty of loops (belts with only 2 or 3 loops are a pet hate of mine), a scalloped V neck and back. It zips to the rear. All that is missing in my view is pockets. We should make putting pockets on dresses mandatory. Someone call Modern June Cleaver now she has (hopefully) passed her Bar exam and get her to make it the law!

I have been buying clothes from Lindy Bop for about 3 years now. What first attracted me to them was their prices! Coming in at around £35 for a dress, Lindy Bop provide a great deal of budget friendly pinup staples. Budget was crucial for me when I first starting out wearing pinup / vintage inspired fashion, as I didn't want to spend a fortune on clothes, when I hadn't really found my style yet. Lindy Bop enabled me to buy quite a few dresses, often in their sales, to get a feel for what I liked, what shapes and styles suited me and what colour pallets complemented my hair and skin tone, without breaking the bank.

When I first started buying from Lindy Bop, I did have a few quality control issues. Seams would be a little weak, buttons would be loose and the fit would be slightly and inexplicably 'off'. But, " you get what you pay for, right?" I thought. However, over the last 3 years, Lindy Bop have clearly upped their game and their garments are rapidly increasing in quality. So much so that I would say now, it is not even an issue. Their fit however, is still an issue for me.

I have always struggled with the fit of Lindy Bop's clothes. The trouble I have is that I am smack bang in the middle of a Size 8 and a Size 10. I am a Size 10 bust, but a Size 8 waist! I deliberated over which size to get in the Daria for a while. I have a 35 inch bust, so the Size 8 at 31.9 inches was really out of the question. So the Size 10 at 33.9 inch bust would be more appropriate. However, this left me with a compromise to make - more room in the bust and a bigger waist (the waist comes in at 28.4 inches - I'm a 26.5!), or less room in the bust and a smaller waist? I decided that the boobs came first and that the belt could cinch in any extra material at the waist. Plus, I hate clothes that are too tight at the waist; it means you have to eat less cake at lunch and that's a deal breaker in my book! Size 10 it was!

I gave Daria a good measure lying flat and she does run true to the size chart - 33.9 inch bust and 28.4 inch waist. So, if you fit into the Lindy Bop size ranges, you will find this dress fits like a dream. However, sadly, due to my irregular shaped banana bod, I still didn't get the fit I hoped for. I have found in the past that Lindy Bop dresses tend to shrink a little after washing; a number of my size 8 dresses are now on the small side. So I am hoping that after a few hot washes, the dress starts to mold to my irregular shape a little! I just cannot help wondering if the Size 10 was the wrong choice?!

Length wise however, this dress is perfect for me! I am 5 foot 2 inches, so basically a hobbit. I often find dresses sit midway between my calves and not just under my knees where they should be. So it was a nice surprise to find the dress was the right length. I paired the dress with my black petticoat from Vivien of Holloway and my glitter t-bar shoes by Banned's Dancing Days Collection, available from Tigermilly.

On the whole, I love this dress. I just think because I am in between sizes, I am always going to have minor sizing issues with Lindy Bop. That of course has nothing to do with their fit, which clearly runs true to size. It's my banana bod that's the issue. Nevertheless, this won't put me off buying from Lindy Bop. Their new range is stunning, their value for money is unparalleled and invaluable for pinups on a budget, like me! I have always said that it's unfair to expect every company to make clothes to fit you personally. We are all different shapes and sizes and I am no exception. Yes, I am petite, but that doesn't mean that I struggle any less to find clothes to fit me. I am a 12 year old boy with boobs - work that one out!!

The Daria Dress is £35 and available from Lindy Bop.
